The article, entitled This Cat Stays So Cool Loaded Up With Cash, said the newsletter’s ETF Portfolio is rated by Hulbert Financial Digest, the leading investment newsletter watchdog, as one of the top returners in the past year. Entering August, it was up 32.62% vs. the S&P 500’s 3.44% rise. Year to date, it’s up 14.82% vs. the S&P 500’s 2.27%.
Published regularly by CoolcatReport.com Publisher Kevin Kennedy since June 2004, The Coolcat ETF & Fidelity Select Report includes momentum-based rankings of the top-performing ETFs and Fidelity Select mutual funds. The newsletter, which has also been featured in MarketWatch.com, is sent monthly by email at the beginning of each month.
The article by IBD ETF Reporter Murray Coleman notes Kennedy rode the wave of hot emerging market funds like iShares Brazil Index Fund (AMEX: EWZ), but has grown more defensive and has 30% of the portfolio in cash. He’s also shifted the portfolio away from emerging markets and has recently added three European ETFs to his portfolio.
ETFs are similar to mutual funds, but are traded like stocks. Assets invested in ETFs have doubled in the past two years to more than $300 billion, and there are now more than 200 ETFs for investors to choose from. These funds allow for greater diversification of your portfolio by allowing investors to invest quickly in major market indexes, hot sectors, foreign countries and even commodities.
Kennedy currently ranks prospective ETF Portfolio positions by six-month gain. ETFs also have to have at least a 1.3-to-1 ratio between their 52-week highs and lows to ensure some volatility, trade at least 100,000 shares daily to ensure some liquidity and be priced above $5. Kennedy uses a 10% stop-loss on all new positions and generally holds about 10 positions in the portfolio.
This approach places six European ETFs among the current qualifiers. Other hot ETF areas include gold and energy.
The number of qualifying ETFs for the portfolio has fallen from 51 at the end of April to 17 in the past month.
